If you still doubted it, this story may confirm to you that video games are sometimes much more than a simple hobby. Following the death of a Chinese player, CD Projekt created a very special NPC in the Phantom Liberty DLC of Cyberpunk 2077. We tell you the whole story.

When Gundam meets Cyberpunk 2077

There are stories that bring tears to the eye. Shortly following the release of Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty DLC, Chinese players noticed that CD Projekt had created a very special character to pay tribute to a player who unfortunately died before the game’s release. Last year, in fact, a young Cyberpunk 2077 fan named Renfei died due to heart disease. Passionate regarding robotics and scale models, the young boy ran his own store dedicated to the sale of Gundam products that he created himself.

Following his death, the store stopped operating for a while until some customers noticed that it had resumed service. Very quickly, they noticed that the products delivered were not of the same quality. Actually Renfei’s mother, then in her fifties, had decided to learn to build scale models like her son so that the shop might keep running. Asked what motivated her to embark on this operation, Renfei’s mother replied:

When I see him once more in heaven, we will have more passions to share.

The story having made the rounds on the Chinese Internet, CD Projekt finally decided to pay tribute to Renfei with the release of Phantom Liberty. In the DLC, we can indeed come across an NPC named 千寺狐 (Qian Si Hu), which is exactly the name Renfei used to promote his store on social networks. This account is still active today, since it was also taken over by his mother. In Cyberpunk 2077, the character who serves as Renfei’s tribute obviously works on different cybernetic prosthetics, much like an upgraded version of what he did in real life.

Renfei previously expressed his love for Cyberpunk 2077

While he was known more for his Gundam model business than for his love of Cyberpunk 2077, Renfei had already proven himself to be a fan of the game during his lifetime. Indeed, one of the products he sold in his shop was none other than a reproduction of the famous Relicthe chip that allows you to save your mind digitally in Cyberpunk 2077 and which notably contains the personality of Johnny Silverhand.

Since his death, Renfei’s mother continues to sell this replica of the Relic which she even tried to perfect with the help of a few fans. In a message posted on Chinese networks following the release of Phantom Liberty, she shared a message addressed to her deceased son:

Son, this evening many friends told me that they saw you, they said that you were a doctor specializing in prosthetics. I don’t know if you’re doing well there, I miss you a lot. You know, I don’t play video games a lot. I played a bit of Zuma and other simple games like Connect the Dots. This vacation I want to learn how to play Cyberpunk 2077, just because you’re into it.

Contacted by our colleagues at Gamesradar, CD Projekt did not wish to comment on this subject to confirm that the homage was indeed intentional, but the clues seem to go in this direction, and Renfei’s mother seems to firmly believe in it. A very beautiful story which will have at least done good to those close to the young Cyberpunk 2077 fan, and which reminds us that video games can go well beyond a simple pastime.
