Five years since the last album, hard times during the corona pandemic with death and serious illness of dear people – but now it’s finally “Everything Paletti” once more for Norbert Schneider. The 43-year-old singer/songwriter has released himself in his inimitable positive way with the album of the same name (released by Universal). And he presented the new work live on Thursday evening with a fantastic concert in the sold-out Viennese club Porgy & Bess.
It’s no wonder that following all the blows of fate, the songs on the new album are predominantly regarding spiritual needs, transience and love. But: This is anything but a sad work – Norbert Schneider: “For me, music has to be positive.” And so he, who always casually walks between jazz, blues, New Orleans Swamp Style and Austropop on stage in the footsteps of Georg Danzer, recorded a very gospel-like and rousingly life-affirming work.
And on stage, as always, Schneider’s enthusiasm for playing and his notoriously casual slyness dominate. Even a song regarding the last journey – “Ollas muass verh” – becomes the “happiest scrap song”. Of course, the frontman also benefits from the fact that he has gathered an exquisite band around him: Above all, Tini Kainrath and Alex Horstmann on co-vocals – that results in pure gospel. And so it’s no coincidence that the evening begins with the album’s opener: “Gospel-Batterie”, as in the studio in a great acapella version.
Immediacy and authenticity are important for “Alles Paletti” – Schneider deliberately recorded the entire album with his band using an analogue eight-channel mixer in session style, and did so in two whole days. The material is now published as raw as it was created – without subsequent repairs, overdubs or similar “cosmetics”. And the songs come out on stage so spontaneously, often extended and refined with very groovy improvisations.
By the way, Norbert Schneider didn’t just play down the tracks from the new album at the release concert, but also enriched his program with tried-and-tested ones – for example with the pleading, bluesy “Herrgott schau obe auf mi” and his very first self-written song “Von Buxbaam und Kirschen”, both terrific – as well as the Danzer classics “Ollas Leiwaund” and “Oide i hoid auf di”. But back to what’s new: If anyone needs a listening tip, here’s one: “I wü an wos glaum”, a powerful event live with the soulful Tini Kainrath and Max Tschida on the groovy Hammond C-3.
