Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi intervened to save the life of Egyptian champion and former world bodybuilder Ashraf Foula following his health condition deteriorated, to quickly direct intervention in order to grant him the necessary health care at state expense.
Fula won the World Bodybuilding Championship several times, in 2011 in India, then in Ecuador in 2012, and two years later in Brazil, in addition to finishing seventh in the Masters Championship in Spain in 2019.
Ashraf Foula spoke to Sky News Arabia regarding his health condition and the position of the Egyptian presidency, saying:
My health was good and I exercised regularly. While preparing to participate in a major tournament last July, I felt extremely stressed and immediately underwent several medical tests, only to discover an unexpected surprise. The doctors told me that I was suffering from kidney failure and that I needed to receive continuous medical care, take medication carefully, and constantly review my health condition. The treatment options did not succeed in improving my condition, and following consultations, the specialists decided to remove both kidneys. This surgery was actually performed, and then I began to undergo dialysis continuously. My body might not bear much. I began to need a kidney transplant, and I sent many requests for help to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and then the Prime Minister’s Office in order to provide assistance to me as one of Egypt’s champions in bodybuilding. 10 days passed without receiving a response to my request. I then decided to resume the medical trip at my expense, despite the high cost, but I was surprised by a call from the Council of Ministers informing me of the President’s interest in my condition on Thursday and directing my treatment.
Foula affirmed his happiness with the Egyptian presidency’s interest in his request for help regarding treatment at state expense, explaining that “that step had a magical effect on my morale, as I felt the country’s concern for its sports champions.”
Foula received a phone call from the Minister of Youth and Sports, Ashraf Sobhi, wishing him a speedy recovery, according to an official statement issued by the ministry, noting the government’s keenness to carefully follow up on all measures that will be taken in order to preserve his health.
The Egyptian hero explains that he received an invitation from the military hospital in Maadi, and upon his arrival, he felt the doctors’ interest in his condition, and began conducting new tests within a short period to determine the current condition of his body.
He concluded his speech to Sky News Arabia, noting that the medical staff will work to evaluate his condition, before he engages in preparing for the kidney transplant and completing it as quickly as possible, in order to save his life, which is threatened following the removal of his kidneys.
