2023-09-26 15:07:08

Reproductive health involves the opportunity for every person to have a safe, satisfying sex life with the ability and freedom to decide whether or not to conceive children, if and when they want.

Improving reproductive health is one of the main axes of the National Sexual Health Strategy 2017-2030. Also, the second roadmap which breaks it down into priority actions for the period 2021-2024 provides for several concrete actions aimed at facilitating access to contraception for all.

On this World Contraception Day of September 26, 2023, the Ministry of Health and Prevention wishes to highlight the recent advances made to strengthen access to contraception for all.

Major advances initiated in 2022 which will continue in 2023

Since January 1, 2022, the entire contraceptive course and the means of contraception reimbursed by Health Insurance have been 100% covered by Health Insurance without advance payment, for all insured women under the age of 26 years.

Free long-term sexual health consultations have also been extended to all young women and men under 26 years old. This consultation aims to answer questions that young people may have in the field of sexual health (contraception, sexuality, STIs, HIV, abortion, etc.).

Since January 1, 2023, two additional measures have strengthened access to contraception:

  • Hormonal emergency contraception, 100% covered by Health Insurance, is now available in pharmacies for everyone without a prescription. : in order to improve the prevention of unwanted pregnancies, hormonal emergency contraception can, since January 1, 2023, be delivered in pharmacies without a prescription to all people, minors or adults. It is 100% covered by Health Insurance and without advance costs for all people with social security insurance.
  • Several brands of condoms are issued free without prescription to under 26s in pharmacies : since January 1, 2023, reimbursed external condoms can be delivered without a medical prescription in pharmacies with 100% coverage by Health Insurance for people under 26 with social security insurance, with no minimum age. Soon, other brands of external condoms as well as internal condoms should be added to the current offering.

Furthermore, since being well informed is a major issue in preserving your sexual health, these various advances were highlighted during the national sexual health week which took place from June 5 to 11, 2023. Contraception was one of the themes selected as part of the national awareness campaign developed by Public Health France and broadcast during this week of mobilization. This campaign was presented through brochures, posters, TV spots but also via the QuestionSexualite.fr website.
