Qualcomm announced two new spatial computing platforms: Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 and Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1, which will enable the next generation of mixed reality, virtual reality and smart glasses devices.

In the case of Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, there is premium technology with mixed and virtual reality, in a single-chip architecture to unlock immersive experiences in thinner and more comfortable headsets without an external battery. The idea is to obtain a virtual experience without lags or crashes, with good visuals and immersive sound.

The Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 platform promises energy optimizations for thermal planning to design elegant and lightweight smart glasses.

This is a chip integrated into the glasses that offers the ability to capture, share and transmit content without using your hands. Furthermore, the AI present on the device acts as a personal assistant, improving audio quality, allowing visual searches and performing translations in real time. There is also support for a visual display that allows the consumption of content, such as videos, transparently in the user’s field of vision.

The convergence between physical and digital spaces represents an important opportunity for Qualcomm. These next-generation platforms were developed in partnership with Meta and will be commercially released on the company’s devices in 2023, such as the Meta Quest 3 with the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform, and the Ray Ban Meta collection with the Snapdragon AR1 platform.

Other manufacturers also have plans to adopt these innovations next year, reinforcing the preference for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon as the leading platform in the area of Extended Reality (XR).
