The National Cancer Institute (INCan) of the Ministry of Health is hosting the 2nd International Symposium on Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care of Cancer Patients, which takes place from September 27 to 30, where specialists from Mexico and the United States exchange information on technological advances—such as artificial intelligence—applied to the care of illnesses.
In an interview, the head of the Department of Anesthesiology of the National Cancer Institute (INCan), Luis Felipe Cuéllar Guzmán, recognized that Mexico has the first approaches in this area, which is why he highlighted the importance of knowing the experiences of other countries with this type. of boardings.
He pointed out that, in the field of anesthesiology, the national health institutes must be the spearhead in the practice of technological advances.
“Artificial intelligence is increasingly recognized, not only in recreational or fun topics, it now has many practical applications, which also impact medicine.”
During four days of work, INCan will present the results of the protocol called ERAS, put into operation three years ago, with the participation of the MD Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas, whose accelerated recovery process reduces hospitalization times and improves control of pain in patients.
In this regard, Cuéllar Guzmán referred to the two programs established with this model: one, in gastrointestinal surgery, through which they have treated more than a thousand patients with pancreas, colon and liver surgery.
The second program began two years ago and is focused on malignant breast tumors, through which they serve, on average, six patients per day. It is foreseeable that in the short term the number of people served will increase with the implementation of consultations in the evening shift in all areas of INCan, promoted by the new administration of the institute.
The 2nd International Symposium Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care of the Cancer Patient is organized by INCan, the MD Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas, the Mexican Society of Oncological Anesthesiology, the National Certification Council and the INCan Medical Society.
The head of the Department of Anesthesiology highlighted that the participation of the MD Anderson Cancer Center is a recognition of the work being carried out in Mexico, since “it is not so common or so easy for a center of this type to endorse a congress outside the United States.” .
They will also discuss topics such as perioperative care in breast and lung cancer; highly complex anesthetic procedures in liver or pancreas surgery; perioperative care for patients undergoing radiotherapy or enhancing imaging studies, among others.
Jointly, INCan and the MD Anderson Cancer Center will hold a workshop on addressing the airway in patients with head and neck tumors, and will hold meetings to promote research between institutions.
Specialists from INCan and the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition “Salvador Zubirán” (INCMNSZ) participate in this international meeting.
The United States delegation is attended by 16 experts from the MD Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas and the University of Colorado, recognized worldwide for their contributions to scientific evidence.
