The four candidates for head of the Buenos Aires Government had their debate tonight, in which Jorge Macri, Leandro Santoro, Ramiro Marra y Vanina Biasi They presented their main proposals in a format that was “constricted”, since it prevented the interruption of the candidates and the exchange only took place through questions.
Despite this, the communication teams of the four candidates met in a TV studio in the Almagro neighborhood, which was broadcast according to the Electoral Code by the City Canal.
The campaign teams and collaborators were positioned the same as the candidates on the panel, but in chairs. That allowed us to see Belén Ludueña (Macri’s partner) sitting next to Eduardo Valdés, Peronist deputy and friend of Cristina Kirchner. Coexistence left nothing to be desired.
The debate started with a problem with Santoro’s microphone, which earned laughter and comments. His voice might be heard muffled in the middle of the gigantic studio and was not reproduced on the speakers. “This does not happen in our government”murmured Marra, who added: “they can’t even handle a debate.”
Buenos Aires debate: with an impassive Macri, the crosses between Marra and Santoro took all the attention
However, during the debate there were several winks between Macri and the libertarian (who was in charge of chicanering the UxP candidate and the FIT candidate, whom he permanently branded as “criminals”) and in parallel, between Santoro and Biasi. The UxP candidate was in charge of clarifying that he was going to debate only with Macri, an elegant way of ignoring Marra and showing himself as the true opposition. The libertarian made it clear that he disputes Santoro for second place and repeated it in several passages. “Leandro Santoro is going to be third”.
What was not seen from the Buenos Aires debate
Despite the discursive strategy and the chicanes, In the cuts you might see the candidate of the PRO and Peronism chatting casually, while Biasi and Marra did not even exchange glances. Even the initial greeting for the camera flashes between Macri and Santoro was cordial and relaxed.
Santoro remained with his arms crossed for much of the debate, while Marra stood, sat and moved in his chair with an annoyed look.
Hernán Iglesias Illia and Fernando De Andreis advised the PRO man in the cuts. Alejandro Grimson and Bárbara Rossen to Santoro. Biasi had the collaboration of Gabriel Solano and Amanda Martin while the libertarian was helped by Eugenio Casielles.
Macri was seen as “methodical” and sticking to his script. It was allowed to introduce some self-criticism in terms of management, such as the Urban Planning Code and medical shifts. “You saw a head of government and a student center. There is a big difference,” the PRO team said ironically.
After the debate, Macri agreed with PERFIL and noted that he was able to “transmit” his proposals. In Peronism they are convinced that the former mayor of Vicente López will not be able to retain the votes of Martín Lousteau and they will reach the runoff.
For its part, there was also conformity in Peronism. They minimized Marra’s attacks, calling him “violent.” What they did celebrate as a goal were the topics of the debate. “There are 7 points that we managed to impose in the speech of all the candidates.” It deals with Urban Planning, mental health issues and rentals among other axes. Despite this, they recognized some confusion and attributed it to Santoro’s personal problems, who gave a brief conference followingwards.
There was also conformity in Marra’s environment. Aware that they work for social networks, the libertarian obtained what he came looking for: a bounce on the platforms to speak to the libertarian audience. In more than one passage he indicated that the proposals will be uploaded to networks. As soon as the debate was over, he was the only candidate who left and did not engage in dialogue with the press. Marra’s gestures caused laughter when Santoro, at the closing, called the voters of Martin Lousteau to accompany him appealing to love. Marra opened her arms in surprise.
At the FIT there was also agreement. “What a good candidate you have,” Deputy Valdés congratulated Solano as soon as he finished. Although they understand that the debate does not move the vote, there was agreement due to the possibility of establishing differences with Kirchnerism and showing themselves as the “true opposition”, by pointing out joint votes in the Legislature and Congress between the PRO and the FdT.
