Trial of Francis Vandy: Former Police Officer Accused of Murder and Weapons Offenses

The Namur Assize Court on Wednesday appointed 7 men and 5 women to begin the trial of Francis Vandy, 73, on October 2. 2 women and one man were designated as alternates.

The accused was found guilty of murder and assassination and offenses once morest the weapons law on September 29, 2022 and sentenced to 25 years in prison by the Hainaut Assize Court. Decision which was overturned by the Court of Cassation on February 8, 2023.

Francis Vandy, former member of the federal judicial police, admitted to having shot on August 28, 2019 in Forchies-la-Marche (Fontaine-l’Evêque) two brothers of Romanian origin who were fishing at the edge of his pond. The bodies of the two victims had been hidden in bushes. The accused initially denied being the shooter before confessing to the facts, explaining that he had fired in self-defense, the two men appearing threatening following he had asked them to leave the scene. An incident had already occurred at the end of 2018 with the same two people.

The ballistics expert revealed that one of the two victims was killed by a point-blank shot in the left cheek, while the other was hit in the left eyebrow. During a search, numerous weapons were found at his home. He then explained that he did not remember his schedule of August 28, 2019 and declared that he suffered from fronto-temporal dementia.

Internet searches related to the facts were discovered on Vandy’s computer. Ballistic analyzes showed that the ammunition used to kill the two victims was the same type as that used by the police for whom the accused worked. Traces of blood were found on his pants and the victims’ DNA was found on the accused’s shoes and on a fishing rod found at his home. He confessed on January 13, 2020

The sitting session will last 5 days and will be chaired by Philippe Gorlée. The general counsel for the trial will be Pierre Hustin. Me Julien Charles and Nabil Khoulalene will defend Francis Vandy.
