Reviewing the Gemini Gala: Controversy, Criticism, and the Future

She and Alexis Durand-Brault, who produced the brilliant series Méganticwill no longer enter anything into the Gemini gala.

Sophie Lorain announced it Monday evening. In the process, Fabienne Larouche, who has had numerous spats with the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, will no longer register her series Stat. This will put an end to the Best Daily Series category, a ridiculous category if ever there was one, given the tiny number of possible candidates. If memory serves, Madame Larouche is no stranger to the introduction of the category to Gemini.

No gala has been mishandled like Gemini’s. In its 38 years of existence, it had a few rare moments of glory and unanimity, but it almost died several times. He always made people laugh. In living memory – and I have been a member of the Academy since its existence, in addition to having been its president – I do not remember a year when the awarding of trophies was not criticized , even if the board of directors of the Academy, under the reign of the general director Patrice Lachance, a fabulous mediator, always split over backwards to satisfy everyone and his father.

ANY ADVICE FROM THE WISE?

Does the Gemini gala still have its place? Why ask this question when the one on Sunday September 17 brought together 856,000 viewers? It’s only a few thousand less than Revolutionthe flagship Sunday evening show on TVA with Masked singers ? Radio-Canada’s competing channels have never given any favors to the Gémeaux gala. They often pitted their most popular programs once morest it, even though they might boast just as much as the public broadcaster regarding the remarkable successes of our television.

Does this mean that the Academy should not question a gala which is the very reason for its existence? There are things to review, it’s true. First, the vote which serves the platforms which have become the launching pad for so many series. Registration costs too expensive for an industry that is struggling. Is it normal that the TV channels which benefit from the promotion of their shows do not really contribute to it? Aren’t producers increasing the number of their registrations at great expense so as not to offend anyone? Chantal Côté, the new president, would be well advised to bring together a council of wise people to review all of this.

ARE THERE REALLY TOO MANY PRICE?

Why did you abolish gender categories for actors and actresses, for example, thereby sowing confusion? I was told that it was done at the request of Toronto where, as we know, gender identity occupies more space than common sense. The Academy hypocritically justified the change under the pretext that it reduces too many categories, an eternal subject of debate.

The main Emmy gala awards an average of 29 trophies and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences gives out more than a hundred in what we call here the industry gala. With its 94 Gemini, our Academy is therefore less complacent than its American counterpart. And I’m not saying anything regarding the dozens of other Emmy trophies awarded by another body, the National Academy (NATAS).

For anyone wondering what a Gemini gives, I suggest asking any winner, whether a star, producer, or craftsman!
