In 2022, 234,300 voluntary terminations of pregnancies were recorded, the highest figure since 1990. An increase which is notably due to several measures which have simplified access to abortion.

After a drastic drop due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of abortions increased in France in 2022. It thus reached its highest level since 1990, revealed a study by the Department of Research, Studies, evaluation and statistics (Drees), published Wednesday September 27.

So, 234 300 Voluntary terminations of pregnancies were recorded in France in 2022, i.e. 7,000 more than in 2021. The majority of these are voluntary medical terminations of pregnancies, carried out outside the hospital.

An increase due to the simplification of abortion measures

This increase in abortions can be explained by several means: first, the extension of the time limit for having an abortion, which went from 12 to 14 weeks of pregnancy at the start of 2022. These abortions represent 20% of the 7,000 additional interventions recorded in one year.

But above all, the fact that since 2021, women no longer have to advance the costs of examinations and interventions which cost several hundred euros. They can also request anonymity and carry out the entire process by teleconsultation, taking the medication at home. The practice, authorized during the first confinement, has been perpetuated.

The study highlights that it is mainly medical abortions that are developing, representing 78% of abortions, or nearly eight out of ten. For comparison, they represented 68% of abortions in 2019 and 31% in 2000. For half (51%), medical abortion is carried out in a hospital establishment. Since 2020, the criteria for medical abortion have evolved. Women can now practice them up to nine weeks of pregnancy, instead of seven previously.
