According to insiders, Apple has presented the French authorities with improved software for the iPhone 12, which has come under criticism. The authority is now checking the updated version, according to the French Digital Ministry. According to the Austrian telecom regulatory authority RTR, there would be no danger due to the increased levels of electromagnetic radiation measured. Rather, France would have changed its measurement method.
As a result of a dispute over excessive electromagnetic radiation in the iPhone 12, the Silicon Valley technology giant promised the French authorities that it would update the software and thus reduce radiation levels. Apple wants to avert a recall of the affected model in France. The domestic radiation regulator ANFR had previously found that the limit values were slightly exceeded in its tests. The country had therefore ordered a stop to sales of the iPhone 12 and threatened a recall. A deadline for this would have expired on Wednesday.
Different test procedures
With its results, the ANFR has brought other countries onto the scene. However, the testing procedure in France differs from those in other countries and is not part of the European testing standard. The RTR is aware of the facts, it said at the request of the APA. In Europe, the limit values for electromagnetic radiation would be four watts per kilogram. Measurements in France would have found 5.74 watts per kilogram, but according to RTR this is because France changed the measurement methodology and thus the European limit values were exceeded. According to APA information, measurements were taken closer to the device and therefore closer to the radiation source. In Austria, the limit values for electromagnetic radiation are regularly checked. There is no official warning regarding the iPhone 12.
France’s neighboring country Belgium, which had also requested an improved version of the software for the iPhone 12, is not available, according to the Belgian regulatory authority BIPT. Belgium now expects further steps at the European level. The Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) had previously said: “We are in contact with the French authority regarding a Europe-wide solution.”
