Female soccer players bring new dynamics to the SSM

A milestone for the local competitive sports industry: 16 female talents combine football and school well.

When Laura Feiersinger was still at school, she was a lonely exotic football player in the Salzburg school sports model SSM. The Saalfeld native has made her way and has now played 108 international matches for Austria. Thanks to the entry of Red Bull Salzburg, women’s football is now being taken to a whole new level in the SSM. No fewer than 16 young female soccer players (two of them in junior high) are the model’s protégés.

With the demanding everyday life of the Bulls’ newly created U16 girls’ team, it wouldn’t be possible any other way: “We train six times a week and can still juggle it with school,” says 14-year-old offensive player Valentina Akrap.

The football classes in the Christian-Doppler-Gymnasium are now mixed. SSM managing director Thomas Wörz is pleased: “This creates a completely new dynamic at this location.” Among the boys, today’s ÖFB team players like Nicolas Seiwald and Matthias Seidl were still among themselves in the SSM. Tim Paumgartner from FC Liefering, recently a goalscorer in the Youth League, emulates them: “The SSM is the perfect partner to achieve your goals.”

Although Thomas Wörz can proudly point to dozens of international medals for his individual athletes, he is particularly happy regarding the new flagship girls’ football: “In the past, the best talents went to the national women’s football center in St. Pölten and only the second team stayed with us.” The additional academy raises women’s football in Austria to a new level of quality.

Manfred Pamminger, managing director of the Red Bull Football Academy, once an SSM graduate himself, has seen great enthusiasm in his club following just a few months. The former skepticism towards women’s football has completely disappeared: “We know from our years of cooperation with the SSM that our talents will be well looked following here. This will also be the case with the girls.”

The young people also feel optimally looked following in other sports: Figure skater Flora Schaller says: “Thanks to SSM, I can go on the ice three mornings a week.” Red Bull ice hockey crack Luca Auer is a graduate and gives the younger ones a helping hand: “Sometimes the school/sport double is a big challenge, but it can be achieved thanks to SSM.”
