Child protection concepts are becoming more common. A look at Salzburg’s clubs.
Last week, the government in the Council of Ministers approved the “child protection package”, which, among other things, provides for the mandatory implementation of protection concepts in schools from December. But children and young people also deserve protection outside of school. The Stadt Nachrichten took a look at the concepts of a Salzburg children’s and youth facility and a sports club.
Two concepts in the Lehen association Spektrum
The Spektrum association has two child protection concepts. A general and an internal concept provide instructions on behavior that is intended to increase protection. According to Petra Burgstaller from the Spektrum association, this includes criminal record extracts, information for employees on how to handle photographs or how to react in situations in public spaces, for example when adults are watching games. At the moment, the creation is still voluntary, but according to Burgstaller there has already been an advance announcement from the Ministry of Justice that the concepts will become mandatory for clubs and organizations that work with children in the future as part of prevention.
Further training and information materials for the sports sector
The TGUS (Turn-Gym-Union-Salzburg) does not have a fully formulated concept, explains President Johann Pichler. However, you are obliged to obtain an extract from your criminal record. In addition, further training is common, and certificate courses are even mandatory in competitive sports. This presents the clubs with major challenges, as on the one hand there is a constant change of marriage coaches and on the other hand the club has to bear the costs. “In some cases, the state sports associations and state sports organizations are not even set up to cover the costs.” However, Pichler sees the child protection concepts that are drawn up on a voluntary basis as justified. One problem, however, is internal protection once morest, for example, abusive trainers. Unfortunately, this is often difficult to recognize in gymnastics.
Help with the creation of child protection concepts and confidants
Since 2018, the “Safe Sports” department from the state of Salzburg has been available to help create child protection concepts. This also offers workshops on prevention for the confidants of the respective sports associations. Since 2021, the confidants can be found on the state’s website.
Citizens’ list: Subsidized associations should develop concepts on a mandatory basis
Citizen list councilor Bernhard Carl says that’s not enough. According to him, all subsidized clubs that deal with children should develop a child protection concept.
