Designer of instrument watches, Bell & Ross appropriates the most symbolic dial of an airplane cockpit with the new BR 03 Gyrocompass. A highly evocative timepiece, designed for lovers of the aeronautical world
The fighter plane silhouette in the center of the black dial leaves no room for doubt: the new limited edition BR 03 Gyrocompass is a tribute paid by Bell & Ross to one of the worlds most dear to it, that of the aeronautics. This profile is faithful to the technical drawing present in the dials available to a pilot at the controls of his plane. The watch adopts the graphic codes of what professionals call the heading indicator. An essential element of guidance on a dashboard since this representation in the sky of the plane allows the pilot to know his direction in the blink of an eye and, if necessary, to realign himself on a magnetic compass. By getting a little closer to the atmosphere on board a cockpit, Bell & Ross is staying the course.
The BR 03 family is a central pillar of the Bell & Ross collections. Since its launch in 2006, it has shown the full extent of the watchmaking house’s creativity with a concept: putting indicators from an airplane’s dashboard on the wrist. Reinvented this year in new proportions, the iconic BR 03 range offers its symbolic round-in-square shape in a 41mm case. Also available in this new dimension, the BR 03 Gyrocompass has a black ceramic case, measuring only 10.6 mm thick and waterproof to 100 meters. Completing the iconic Flight Instruments collection initiated in 2010, this timepiece with a strong personality reveals all its functionality by transposing the aerial navigation tool into a watchmaking object. Robust and inspired by aeronautical equipment, the black rubber strap, attached by a black PVD-treated steel pin buckle, underlines the professional dimension of this watch, produced in a limited series of 999 pieces.

Increased readability day and night
The new BR 03 Gyrocompass has been designed to offer perfect practical readability of its indications in all circumstances and day and night. The silhouette of the fighter plane attracts attention. This is, of course, the indication of the time, made perfectly readable by the position of the tip of the nose of the device on the indexes. A solution already adopted by Bell & Ross in 2013. Externalizing the numerical inscriptions on the flange, immediate reading of the time is obvious. As a counterpoint, the large minute hand benefits from a generous white arrow, like a pointer. Fine and ultra precise, the central second hand indicates the seconds, with an interesting kinetic visual effect thanks to its large counterweight, permanently animating the dial, like in a plane in flight. Discreet but effective, the date appears in a round window, placed between 4 and 5 o’clock. A way to be present when needed, without disturbing the instantaneous reading of time indications in the heat of the moment.

A celebration of mechanical excellence
In addition to the power of the display, this watch also pays homage to the complex mechanical design of the aeronautical gyrocompass. For a pilot, the precision of the direction to follow is a crucial element. To find your way around, engineers have developed this visually simple but technically complex system which uses a mechanism capable of transforming the position of the plane in flight into a vertical graphic representation on the dial. To indicate the hours, minutes, seconds and date – the functions to which this watch instrument is assigned – the BR 03 GYROCOMPASS does not include a gyrocompass but a watch movement with proven reliability, the BR-CAL.302 self-winding caliber automatic. Beating at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4Hz), it has a 54-hour power reserve. Perfect for professional use, both in flight and on land.
