Spotify regularly renews its features in order to stay on top of music streaming. And a new system that acts as both a social network and simultaneous remote listening is a logical addition for the application.
You already know “groupwatch”, group viewing of Disney+ (a feature which will unfortunately disappear) or “watch together” of Discord. Here is the equivalent for Spotify: Jam. The only difference, of course, is that we’re talking regarding listening to music and not watching a video or a film.
With Jam, you will now be able to launch live listening sessions, at least if you have the premium version. Because for those who have the free version of Spotify, Jam will be reduced to a simple passive listening system, to which they will not be able to contribute directly, and whose extremely limited functionality will make its use almost pointless. Perhaps this should be seen as a way for the American streaming service to get more customers to pay for their subscription.
Jam is reminiscent of certain features already well known to Spotify users, like Blend for example. But there is a very specific difference: instant listening which until now did not exist on the platform. You will be sure by launching a listening session that everyone will hear the same thing more or less at the same time, there or with the other features, it was more a question of listening to them separately when you want.
Another concern for those who do not have Spotify Premium: they will not be able to launch a session and they will have to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network as that of the person launching the session. On the contrary, those who have the paid version will be able to accept invitations from their friends wherever they are on the planet, and they will be able to add the tunes of their choice to the listening playlist.
For now, Jam is rolling out to Android and iOS. And we don’t really know if there will be a desktop version or not.
Note that although jam allows for collaborative listening sessions, the host retains most of the control. He can thus delete music proposed by certain people if they judge that it does not correspond to the desired atmosphere. He can also block any modification of the playlist in order to remain the official DJ of the evening (and to avoid some arguments between friends over the next track they want to hear).
Jam will also know the identity of anyone who added a song to the playlist, which will allow you to know which person added this song which completely ruins the playlist.
If you have Spotify premium, simply click on the speaker icon next to the song you’re playing (the icon you may already use to choose a Bluetooth speaker for example) to find a brand new button: “start a jam”.
