Port-au-Prince, Sep 25.- The Haitian Government reiterated this Monday the sovereign right of Haiti over the waters of the rivers bordering the Dominican Republic, which must be shared by the two countries, and assured that it will not go back on the matter.

«At this point, we are not going to back down. “Our neighbor has to understand that, just as it uses the waters of the Masacre River to irrigate its lands, Haiti has the same right,” Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry said at a press conference, in the midst of the crisis between the two countries. for the construction of a canal that has led the Dominican Republic to adopt different measures, including the total closure of the borders since September 15.

According to Henry, “We are telling our neighbors that it is not force or military action or intimidation that will solve the problem. “It is through dialogue and mutual respect that we will find the right solutions that benefit both countries.”

«It is through unity and understanding that we can solve the problem of irrigation of the Maribahoux plain. It is through unity and understanding that we can use all our binational resources,” he stated.

A unity and understanding that, he recalled, allowed Haiti to achieve independence in 1804.

Ariel Henry made these statements upon his return to the country, following participating in the United Nations General Assembly, in which he considered that he represented Haiti with “dignity” and before which he insisted on the request for an international mission that would allow the Haitian police restore order and security, when armed gangs have become strong in the country and control a good part of the territory.
