Car engines, voices, washing machines running… There are many harmful sounds around us that can ruin our sleep. However, some can also promote our falling asleep.
Hannah Shore, Head of Sleep Insights and Research, explored these positive sounds for Premier Inn, a British hotel chain that has just launched a new range of ASMR hotels.
White noise: it helps you fall asleep
To detect which sounds were the most positive or negative for sleep, Hannah Shore and her team surveyed 2,000 British adults. This investigation revealed the importance of white noise for the sleep of many individuals. THE white noise is characterized by a stable and monotonous sound with relaxing qualities. Thus, this type of sound is known for facilitate falling asleep.
Next to 50% of those surveyed claimed that listening to white noise helped them fall asleep or wake up. Next to 26% of them said they listen to it every night. Additionally, 27% of respondents said they might not listen to these types of sounds because they shared a room, which prevented them from sleep properly. In terms of listening mode, 58% said they listened to white noise via a music player or on their phone, 34% via an app and 15% would have a sound machine.
The expert and author of the study explains: “depending on the individual, watching or listening to something soothing before bed can be part of the sleep process. Different sounds generate different responses from our subconscious when we sleep, so what may be soothing for one may not be for another. If you share a bed or room, be considerate and invest in a pair of headphones, or why not try to find a sound that you both find calming?“.
The sleep specialist specifies that this type of method is not suitable for everyone: “Disconnecting isn’t as easy for some people as it is for others, and sounds are a great way to do this. Some people prefer complete silence while for others, silence means they listen to very light sounds“. In addition to showing the importance of white noise for sleep, Hannah Shore listed the sounds that helped people fall asleep. Discover the list of 8 sounds that promote sleep.
