WindhandFrontwoman Dorthia Cottrell has recorded another solo album eight years following her self-titled debut – and with its title Death Folk Country also anticipates a fairly precise radius of the aesthetics that will change on it.

This album to me is regarding painting a picture of a place where my heart lives. I’ve always been asked what ‘kind’ of music I play by people,” says Cottrell. “The title Death Folk Country is partly me describing a genre that fits the sound – but it’s also meant to be taken as a Naming, a coronation of the world inside me. Death Folk Country is the music and also the land where the music takes place, and the two have always been inextricable from each other.
With a dark, threatening, emaciated feeling, Cottrell wanders through an almost ambient form of Gothic Americana. The pace is sober, as if you were walking to a funeral far out on the prairie. The mood is pregnant with sorrowful melancholy, even if a never-tangible hope breathes in the atmospheric beauty, but for that Chelsea WolfeMarissa Nadler, Earthdie Master Musicians of Bukkake, Tu Fawnings Corrina Repp oder Giant Drags Annie Hardy and the (ex)Neurosis-Solo Waldschratt contemplations associated.

In the downright pastoral existentialism, the melodies, mostly built on restrained instruments, have a profound connection (particularly graceful: Family Annihilator), von Harvester is away Death Folk Country mystical and out of time, dark, reveling in the reverb, the space behind the sparingly plucked guitar strings and the voice opening up as an enchanted, curious abyss, which only uses nuances such as drums, violins and synths in an extremely nuanced and reserved way – see for example the softly comforting organ in outstanding slow motion Effigy at the Gates of Ur or the soft, Kyuss-artig Slowcore-Heaviness in Midnight Boy.
The fact that the ballad-like 42 minutes of the second work, when consumed in one go, nevertheless develop a certain uniformity in their transcendent unity, also speaks, conversely, for the captivating homogeneity of this vision.
