A 43-year-old man from Brussels, suspected of being behind a fire in a subsidiary of Delhaize supermarkets in the south of Antwerp last week, was arrested and placed under arrest warrant. The motive which would have motivated him is still unknown, indicates the prosecution.

Last Thursday, a row of shopping carts was set on fire in the entrance to Delhaize located on Museumstraat in Antwerp. Thanks to the rapid intervention of the emergency services, the flames were brought under control and did not reach the building. The store was able to reopen later in the day.

CCTV footage allowed police to link a vehicle to the events, which then led to the identification of a suspect. The 43-year-old man was arrested in Brussels and placed under arrest warrant by the investigating judge on suspicion of arson. The suspect will appear before the council chamber on Wednesday.

The prosecution was unable to determine whether the fire was linked to the ongoing social conflict at Delhaize or whether another motive had pushed the suspect to act.
