An attack would have allowed hackers to recover sensitive files from Sony. But what do we really know regarding this leak?
It should first be noted that there has been no confirmation from the main party, Sony, regarding the veracity of this attack. The statements were reported by the Australian site Cyber Security Connectthen widely reported on the web, but it is nevertheless important to remain cautious.
A brand new group of hackers, called Ransomed.vc, claims to have been able to bypass all of the Japanese giant’s security, and now holds more than 6,000 files resulting from this operation concerning the universe PlayStation. Supporting screenshots, the hackers also clarified the supposed nature, without the information being verifiable or the evidence irrefutable.
New methods
« We have managed to bypass Sony’s systems (…) we will not ask for a ransom! We will sell them. Because Sony refuses to pay. Data is for sale. We sell them. » Here is the chilling statement from the group, which also threatens to publish all of these files on September 28, if Sony or a potential buyer do not come forward by then.
Furthermore, the ransomware group, created only last September, displays a very different strategy from its competitors. Relying on the rules established by the European GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), it threatens its victims by offering them a ransom of an amount lower than a potential “official” fine. Cynical.
Privileged targets
Attacks of this type have increased considerably in recent years. In the video game field, the last major targets were Rockstar, with the huge leak concerning the future GTA VIbut also Activision Blizzard and its plans for the future of its flagship license, Call Of Duty. Video games and their colossal turnover arouse desire.
However, the supposed attack, once once more, from Ransomed.vc, is not in common with that which affected the PlayStation Network in 2011, revealing data from 77 million user accounts. So to be on the safe side, it is of course advisable to change your access passwords to your PlayStation accounts, but all this information should be taken conditionally for the moment.
