Rising Migrant Crisis in El Paso: Overcrowded Shelters and Increasing Homelessness on the Streets

Many sleep on the streets, as shelters are at capacity.

While the city of El Paso, Texas, records approximately 2,000 daily encounters with migrants, the director of a shelter warns that the number of people sleeping on the streets increased overnight and is expected to continue growing.

About 300 migrants woke up Monday on the streets surrounding three shelters in downtown El Paso, according to John Martin, deputy director of the Homeless Opportunity Center.

Martin added that migrants have also begun camping in a downtown park.

“I think in a few days we will exceed the capacity of the migrant shelters,” Martin warned.

According to Martin, the majority of migrants sleeping on the streets are single adults, as shelters prioritize housing women and children. All downtown shelters, he indicated, are currently over capacity.

Martin says regarding 86% of the migrants his center has served this month are Venezuelans.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced last Friday an effort to increase the number of state-funded buses leaving El Paso to sanctuary cities across the country.

Martin says many Venezuelans don’t have money for transportation and might take Abbott up on his offer out of necessity.
