Increasing Use of Legal Laughing Gas: A Growing Concern in Brussels and Brabant

A sharp increase in the use of laughing gas (nitrous oxide) in the northern district of Brussels is perceptible, the Brussels-North police zone said on Monday. The problem is that this product is over the counter and the police therefore have little room to act once morest this scourge.

“We cannot draw up reports for the use of laughing gas and we therefore do not have figures on the increase in this use,” explained Audrey Dereymaeker, spokesperson for the Brussels-North police zone. “But it’s something that we clearly see on the ground, not only us, but also the traders and residents”. According to this, this is a problem which also arises in many other municipalities in the Brussels region and in Brabant.

Currently, the police mainly punish users of this drug when they contravene the rules of public cleanliness (throwing nitrous oxide capsules on the ground) or when they drive under the influence of this substance. The product is in fact not illegal. It is available over the counter, particularly used in cooking in whipped cream siphons.

Inhaling nitrous oxide causes a feeling of relaxation with effects such as uncontrolled laughter and the feeling of feeling no pain.
