It’s official, Terminal will not replace the name Command Prompt or cmd.exe. This concerns Windows 11 but also the next generations of the operating system.
The information was spotted in a podcast published on the channel YouTube by Microsoft. The firm discussed how the innovations influence developments in Windows, but they will not change “cmd.exe” or its associated name, Command Prompt, which will continue.
Terminal is richer and more advanced. The application boasts of many features that do not exist in a simple Command Prompt window. This includes, for example, split panes and wallpaper customization.
Terminal was announced at the Build 2020 developer conference. It has since evolved to offer a full-fledged integrated environment with backwards compatibility, improved rendering with GPU acceleration, modern text rendering, and several other things. For example, from Terminal it is possible to access Linux, the command prompt and PowerShell.

This situation has been a source of concern for many users fearing that the Command Prompt software aka cmd.exe will be removed in the face of the rise of Terminal and AI. Now the answer is known it will not be the case.

This is a very common question. Command Prompt and Windows Terminal work hand in hand. Windows Terminal serves as a host for command line shells, such as Command Prompt. When you type commands in the terminal, it communicates them to the command prompt for execution and then displays the results. Customizing backgrounds not only adds a personal touch, but also helps distinguish different shells.
