A French restaurant wants to increase the acceptance of bitcoin in a revolutionary way. Accepts only bitcoins for certain dishes and drinks. In Lyon, the capital of French gastronomy, there are an amazing number of restaurants. Like many bouchons, Comptoir Brunet in the center of Lyon is a family business that has been serving staples of Lyon cuisine since 1934, such as andouillettes or chicken liver pâté. However, it differs from the rest in that it is a site for ardent bitcoin enthusiasts. Benjamin Baldassini fell down the rabbit hole 5 years ago following graduating with a degree in IT. For a while, he considered becoming a bitcoin developer, but following his father’s death, he decided to take over the family restaurant. However, with his desire for bitcoin undiminished, he decided to connect the popular restaurant with his favorite cryptocurrency. It first started by enabling payments with bitcoin. Benjamin also launched his own Bitcoin node, and then a payment processor on the Lightning Network, BTCPay Server. After the restaurant staff were equipped with Bitcoin and Lightning Network wallets, and the door sign proudly proclaimed “we accept bitcoin”… the vast majority of guests continued to pay for their lunch in Euros. To encourage payments in bitcoin, Benjamin went further and came up with a new idea. He figured out that apéros and fine liqueurs can only be paid for with bitcoins. The apéro, or aperitif, is much more than a simple pre-dinner drink, it is an important part of French life. The combination of a relaxed followingnoon, snacks and wine (or beer) is a great opportunity for locals to gather with friends and rethink the world. With the introduction of the apéro paid only in bitcoins, Café Brunet witnessed something amazing: the traditional restaurant became a meeting place for the local bitcoin community.
