Twenty years following the Abu Ghraib scandal, a report from the NGO Human Right Watch (HRW) accuses the American government of never having paid compensation to victims of human rights violations in prisons under its control in Iraq, despite his promises in 2004.
Tens of thousands of Iraqis were detained in Abu Ghraib prison between 2003 and 2006. Among them, 70 to 90% were innocent according to the Red Cross. “We found 318 potential victims and 426 alleged attackers but these are only the cases that were investigated by the American army so it is possible that there were many more,” explains Sarah Sanbar, researcher for the NGO Human Right Watch, Monday in La Matinale.
According to a report by Human Right Watch, published Monday, 97 American soldiers involved in 38 cases of abuse have been sanctioned so far. “But there were only 11 who were sent to court martial to face criminal charges,” continues Sarah Sanbar.
Lack of response from the US government
Furthermore, according to the NGO’s report, no victim has received compensation from the American government. Tortured at Abu Ghraib, Ali Al Qaissi founded an association of former victims in American prisons in Iraq. “We hope that one day all complaints will be taken into account and investigated, and that those who tortured Iraqis will be held accountable for their actions.” The former victim also hopes that those affected will be able to receive real compensation “in proportion to the suffering they endured”.
Asked by Human Right Watch to confirm the absence of reparations for the victims, the American government never responded.
