Having emotional well-being may seem, at first glance, something simple, but it is not. We must work on our emotions to feel good and have a full life, in which we know ourselves, are able to adapt to the ups and downs of life and have the necessary flexibility to learn new things.

“A meta-study published in Nature Medicine in which researchers examined five longitudinal studies. The analysis of the results revealed that having a hobby was associated with fewer depressive symptoms, better self-reported health, more happiness and greater life satisfaction, with life satisfaction being the most consistently related to hobbies,” Muyinteresante reported.

“Increased participation in hobbies predicted subsequent decreases in depressive symptoms and increases in self-reported health, happiness, and life satisfaction. The results vary little from one country to another, suggesting a relative universality of the response,” the researchers explained in the publication.

Formula to create emotional well-being

“Scientists observed that, on average, there were more people over 65 who had hobbies in those countries that had a higher score on the global happiness and life expectancy index. We are talking regarding countries like Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland”, respectively.

“Hobbies might contribute to older people’s life satisfaction through many mechanisms, such as feeling in control of the mind and body, finding purpose in life, and feeling competent in dealing with everyday problems,” the researchers explained.

“The association of hobbies with life satisfaction is especially promising given that it was observed not only in healthier respondents, but also in respondents such as those in the US, where a very high proportion of respondents were living with mental illness or long-term physical injuries and where psychosocial interventions might be even more relevant,” they concluded.

In a field experiment, 30 gardeners carried out a stressful job related to gardening.
