$28,785 is the amount raised during the walk to defeat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). That’s twice as much money as last year. 400 people participated in the activity which took place in La Malbaie.

The walk and online donations brought in $18,100. Added to this is the contribution of Yvon Perron, who collects donations with his little houses, amounted to $10,685.

We must also add an amount of $14,390 raised through a cycling activity organized by Denis Villeneuve, his family and friends.

60% of donations raised go to support services offered to people with ALS and their families. 40% goes to funding Canadian research projects to better understand the disease and achieve treatment.

The March held in Charlevoix was under the honorary presidency of Martin Lavoie de La Malbaie. Employee of the Sénéchal jewelry store, he is also a municipal councilor for district number 2 and is well known as a DJ. He was diagnosed with ALS himself and is courageously fighting the disease.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is an incurable neurodegenerative disease with an average life expectancy following diagnosis of 2 to 5 years.

“People affected gradually lose their ability to move: performing simple daily actions such as speaking, walking, eating and even breathing become struggles as the motor neurons that characterize the disease are lost. They thus become prisoners of their body,” March coordinator Elsa Tremblay had already explained in our pages.
