The Italian acting legend Sophia Loren had to have hip surgery following a fall. The 89-year-old fell in her home in Geneva, Switzerland, on Sunday, her management announced on Facebook that evening. She suffered fractures to her hip. Loren was successfully operated on that followingnoon. Now she has to go through a “short recovery process” followed by a phase of rehabilitation.
The actress only celebrated her 89th birthday on Wednesday. Loren’s best-known films include “Italian Wedding” and the Hollywood comedy “Houseboat”. She received an Oscar for the leading role in “And Yet They Live”.
Loren was actually expected in the southern Italian city of Bari on Tuesday. There she was supposed to become an honorary citizen and open what was now the fourth restaurant under her name. It was now announced on the restaurant chain’s homepage that the opening had to be postponed due to the fall. Several Italian newspapers also reported on the fall that evening.
