Nearly 1 in 5 adults suffer from snoring and sleep apnea concerns, which can cause problems in their daily lives.
If the condition is left untreated, those affected are 30 percent more likely to develop heart disease and 60 percent more likely to suffer a stroke.
Doctor David Jarley, from the Better Sleep Clinic, said: “In the long term, people with sleep apnea have a 140 percent increased risk of coronary heart disease, depression, stroke, and a 140 percent higher risk of heart failure.”
“It can also lead to type 2 diabetes and dementia early in life,” he added.
Obesity, drinking alcohol, smoking, sleeping on your back, and hypothyroidism are factors that increase the chances of exposure to the condition.
Snoring is more common in men and the risk increases with age.
Jarley said: “There are at least 8 million Britons suffering from the condition, and this number is rising. It is important to watch for signs which include loud snoring, gasping for air in your sleep, waking up with a dry mouth or headache in the morning and difficulty sleeping.”
