Moneris systems for processing debit and credit card transactions suffered a technical problem on Saturday, causing a widespread outage across Canada.
This is what many Internet users first reported on X (formerly Twitter). In addition, the company’s website was also down, as the QMI Agency noted.
In an email sent to the QMI Agency, Moneris confirmed that it had “an intermittent network outage” that lasted approximately 90 minutes early this followingnoon.
“We have resolved the issue and transaction processing is back to normal. Merchants may experience slow transactions while systems resume operations,” said Darren Leroux, director of communications at Moneris.

However, more than an hour passed between the time the outage began and the company reported the situation, which several people deplored.
“Come on @Moneris give us some info on why you’re down. Was it a hack? We have businesses to manage and your lack of transparency is worrying. This is exactly why we cannot become a cashless society,” @Jordan RPALPAL tweeted.

We have businesses to run and your lack of transparency is worrisome.
This is exactly why we can’t turn into a cashless society. #Warning #MonerisHack

For its part, Interac confirmed to TVA Nouvelles that all its services were working on Saturday, despite the fact that more than 2,000 people reported an outage on the Downdetector site.
