Free market e Shopee are finally among companies that join Remessa Compliance, a Brazilian government program that aims to combat tax evasion and simplify the taxation process for international purchases of up to US$50. With the request in progress since last week, the officialization took place today (22), when the certification of the two companies was published in the Official Gazette of the Union.
Mercado Livre and Shopee join the program that exempts purchases of up to US$50
Previously, payment of taxes on international purchases only occurred when the products arrived in Brazil. However, the Conforming Remittance Program brings a significant change to this process, exempting import taxes for purchases of up to US$50 made by retailers that have joined the program. This measure aims to simplify the import operation and combat tax evasion.
Until the previous week, companies that had already joined the program represented approximately 67% of the total volume of remittances sent to Brazil, according to data from the Federal Revenue Service. In addition to Mercado Livre and Shopee, other giants in the sector, such as Shein, AliExpress e Sinerlog, were already authorized to operate under the new rules. Now, only Amazon awaits the formalization of its request in the Official Gazette of the Union.

Is there any way to reduce these taxes?
A rumor emerged on the internet that large Chinese companies, such as Shein, Shopee and AliExpress are studying a way to reduce the incidence of taxes on purchases exported to Brazil. One of the most viable ways is to use Uruguay as a gateway for these Chinese products. If this really works, this would be a way to circumvent the import tax system, as this is not charged by Brazil for countries that are part of Mercosur.
