The audience did not appreciate the brilliant work of the artists.
Andrey Kavun’s series “Sherlock Holmes” was released in 2013. It was not warmly received by the public – it was compared both to Soviet films and to the modern version of American filmmakers. Igor Petrenko in the role of the famous detective did not impress the audience, so the project was undeservedly forgotten. But the peculiarity of the series is that its main character was not Sherlock at all, but his partner Dr. Watson or Watson, as he is more often called now.
Igor Petrenko certainly managed to show Holmes in a new way. The actor embodied on the screen the image of a nervous, eccentric, sarcastic, but still a brilliant detective. But at the same time, Andrei Panin, who played the role of war veteran Dr. John Watson, remained the main star.
It is he who sets the tone for the entire narrative. An ironic, talented doctor who boldly enters into battle, shoots accurately and covers his eccentric comrade at every step – viewers have never seen Dr. Watson like this.
Even if the director did not intend to shift the focus so much, Panin certainly outshines Petrenko’s hero on the screen. And for an open-minded viewer, Kavuna’s series might be a great way to spend some interesting evenings in front of the screen.
