The cell phone market in Brazil, between smartphones and feature phones, reached the figure of R$ 15.2 billion, in a total of 9.94 million devices sold, in the first quarter of 2023, according to research data IDC Brazil Mobile Phone Tracker Q1/2023. Smartphone consumption represented 95.64% of devices sold.
According to the report, the average price of cell phones in the country decreased by 24.4% in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same months last year. The value of smartphones went from R$2,116 to R$1,589, representing a drop of 24.9%. Despite this, expectations for the second half of the year exceed those in relation to the same period in 2022.
The study also showed that cell phones costing between R$700 and R$999 were the best sold, corresponding to 26% of total sales. Another data measured by the survey showed that the sales volume of 5G smartphones grew by 31% compared to the last quarter of 2022.
Marcelo Sztajn, director of OEX Brasil, a manufacturer of technology accessories such as portable chargers, explains that the boom in the technology sector, especially smartphones, also generates a growing demand for accessories that improve the user experience, complement new functionalities and meet the specific needs of consumers. “The cell phone accessories market is a natural extension of this technological evolution.”
The mobile phone accessories segment is driven by demand for specific accessories such as additional camera lenses, virtual or augmented reality devices, and charging docks compatible with new features such as enhanced cameras, augmented reality capabilities and wireless charging.
Another growing type of accessories is covers, protective films and impact cases. Sztajn highlights that “as smartphones become more expensive and essential in society’s current lifestyle, the need to protect them also increases”. Although protection is a concern, style trends also interfere with the purchasing interests of users who choose to personalize their device.
Brazilian ICT market
In February, IDC Brasil had already released its study IDC Predictions Brazilwhich presented the expectation of a 5% increase, approximately US$80 billion, for the Brazilian ICT (Information and Communication Technology) market in 2023. The perspective is that the Wi-Fi 6 segment will grow 17% as a result of implementation of emerging technologies, such as IoT (Internet of Things, in free translation, Internet of Things) and AI (Artificial Intelligence).
The survey also pointed out that revenues generated from private mobile networks should impact managed services, which are necessary for more complex applications, such as IoT, AI and ML (Machine Learning). With growing investments in IT in Brazil, the forecast is that the private mobile network market will grow by more than 35% per year until 2026.
Sztajn points out that with the growing Internet of Things trend, smartphones are becoming central to controlling a variety of smart devices. This creates space for accessories that enhance this type of experience, such as smart home controls, wireless headphones optimized for voice calls, and object tracking devices.
The growth of electronics e-commerce is also seen by the expert as responsible for expanding the reach of manufacturers, which consequently offers consumers variety. The same study showed the estimated generation of US$5 billion in online retail in 2023.
According to IDC, the Brazilian device market (desktops, notebooks, tablets, feature phones, smartphones, printers, multifunctional devices, monitors and wearables) is expected to generate US$21.5 billion in 2023.
