The Argentine baritone Alejandro Meerapfel, 54, died on Friday night of a heart attack during a concert at a music festival in the French town of Ambronay, in the east of the French country.
“We sadly announce that baritone Alejandro Meerapfel died of a heart attack on stage last night during a concert,” the organizers of the 44th explained this morning. Ambronay Baroque Music Festival through a statement replicated by the French news agency AFP.
Meerapfel participated in the concert of the Capella Mediterranea ensemble and the Namur chamber choir under the direction of also Argentine Leonardo García Alarcón.
The singer was playing the role of God the Father in the oratorio “Dono della Vita Eterna” by Antonio Draghi when he decompensated and collapsed following his second intervention, more than an hour following the start of the show, according to the French specialized media ResMusica.
The event was immediately interrupted and the public evacuated while emergency services treated Meerapfel, although they were unable to revive him.
“His brutal disappearance has left us shocked. He was a man of inestimable kindness. His modesty and talent will remain in our hearts,” said the organizers of the festival, in which Meerapfel had collaborated many times.
García Alarcón, for his part, expressed that “Alejandro was an angel on Earth”: “Before the concert, his smile and good humor filled the souls of the entire artistic and festival team. We will miss him but he will always be with us. we”.
A regular collaborator with García Alarcón and his Capella Mediterranea, Meerapfel had trained at the Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón and had performed in numerous coliseums in Europe and America. His interpretations as the protagonist include “Don Giovanni”, “La Bohème” and “Don Carlo”.
