Already following the first exciting tones When Kings Meet EP I wonder who Imperium and why I’m not familiar with this band yet. Admittedly, the choice of name doesn’t make the search for the band’s origin any easier, because there are countless bands who have chosen this name.

This Imperium Here they come from London and play a successful mixture of heavy and thrash metal. Although the five-piece band has been playing since 2015, their first self-titled EP wasn’t released until 2020. Follow this sign of life now When Kings Meet a second half hour published on its own initiative. Four perfect studio recordings and two rumbling live recordings from the 2022 appearance at the Bloodstock Festival are on offer.

Old school with fresh energy

The five-piece from the London area plays a fresh mix of groovy heavy metal with thrashy riffs from the first minute. I think you can say that the opener When Kings Meet the spirit and joy of playing Metallica Breathes in the mid-1980s. In any case, from the first moment you can hardly keep your head and feet still, because the band immediately captivates the listener.

The second song also works because of the rhythm, the presentation and the speed Desperate Screams immediately in your ear. The mixture of melody, riffs and the audible tribute to the US thrashers from is sure to be great live Anthrax.

It might go on like this forever

Also Capable Of Murder doesn’t back down. The band plays like they are old hands in the business. Even though the riffs fly, there is always some official solo work from the guitars that makes you want to bring out the air guitar.

But the climax comes with the fourth piece called Iron Thunder. There are HERE the full melodic board to listen to. The great production and the perfect combination of riffs and melodies make the EP unmissable for metalheads and make us very hungry for a complete album.

Limited stage feeling

The four studio tracks are followed by two live recordings from last year’s Bloodstock Festival. The band also works perfectly live, but the last two songs performed Capable Of Murder and When Kings Meet have an acoustic flaw.

Unfortunately, the sound quality presented is, to put it diplomatically, authentic, but can only give a limited impression of the energy and joy of playing. You have to turn the volume control a lot to get the fire coming out of the speakers and also to feel the audience reaction. It’s a shame, because an official recording from the soundboard can’t be that difficult?

Conclusion
Imperium
On their second EP, they combine thrashy riffs, melodies and joy of playing into a grooving mixture. The four songs on When Kings Meet are superbly produced and immediately get the listener headbanging. Successful, but far too short! 8,5 / 10
