The 20th AGOA Forum: Strengthening Trade and Investment Ties between the United States and Sub-Saharan Africa

The 20th Forum for Economic and Commercial Cooperation between the United States and Sub-Saharan Africa (AGOA Forum) will be held from November 2 to 4 in Johannesburg, South Africa, according to a joint American-South African declaration published Thursday September 21 by media.

Since its enactment in 2000, the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) has been at the heart of U.S. economic policy and trade engagement with Africa.

The Forum will bring together representatives of the governments of the United States and AGOA-eligible countries, as well as representatives of major regional economic organizations, the private sector, civil society and labor unions.

During the event, participants will discuss how to strengthen trade and investment ties between the United States and sub-Saharan Africa and promote resilient, sustainable and inclusive economic growth and development, the statement said. joint signed by the United States Trade Representative, Katherine Tai, and the South African Minister of Trade and Industry, Ebrahim Patel.

The Forum’s program also includes the “Made in Africa” exhibition which will present the continent’s regional value chains.

“The AGOA Forum is an opportunity for the United States to strengthen our economic partnership with AGOA countries (…) and to discuss opportunities to make this partnership more transformative as we deepen our trade and investment relationships with countries in sub-Saharan Africa,” said Ms. Tai.

AGOA provides eligible sub-Saharan African countries duty-free access to the U.S. market for more than 1,800 products, in addition to 5,000 products eligible for duty-free access under the Generalized System of Preferences.
