Texas Immigration Crisis: State of Emergency Declared to Stem Influx of Immigrants

Texas: A state of emergency has been declared in the city to prevent the uncontrolled flow of immigrants into Texas. On Wednesday alone, 4,000 migrants crossed the US-Mexico border into Eagle Pass, Texas. The influx is now the largest since 15,000 Haitian migrants camped under a bridge in Del Rio, Texas, nearly two years ago.

Most of the immigrants are from Venezuela. Single men are more. Mayor Rolando Salinas said that they are not ready to obey the instructions. About 50 percent of the city’s population was filled with immigrants. This uncontrolled migration creates a severe crisis for the police and fire forces.

Refugees processed by US Customs and Border Protection have moderate accommodation. Many of those currently in custody live under the city’s international bridges. The mayor has instructed the authorities to evacuate the people under the bridge within a day or two.

It usually takes a few days to complete the immigration process. But border sources said it would take more time due to the large number of migrants. More people were sent to the border in Laredo and El Paso to speed up the process.

The presence of serious criminals among the migrants is a matter of concern. Among those detained at Eagle Pass was 64-year-old Peruvian immigrant Roberto Emilio Vasquez-Santamaria. He has been charged with murder in connection with the murder of a man in Texas. Vasquez-Santamaria entered Texas illegally in May but was released following border officials did not recognize his criminal record.

At the same time, centers designed to house immigrants in Tucson, Arizona, and San Diego, California, ran out of space and transferred applicants to other centers. A state of emergency is declared to pave the way for getting help from the government. Once a state of emergency has been declared, it is possible to apply for more financial assistance on a case-by-case basis.
