Around 260 girls and boys attend the Bad Hofgastein elementary school. Many of the children made their way to school in their parents’ taxi. But now everything is different.
Up to 60 parent taxis pulled up in front of the elementary school in Bad Hofgastein before classes started. This regularly caused major traffic problems on the narrow school street near the town center and “difficult situations” arose once more and once more, as director Heidi Schmidl reported on Friday.
But now the situation is very relaxed. After a long struggle, the street in front of the elementary school has been a pedestrian zone for two years. At least in the morning (7:15 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.) and at lunchtime (11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.). Director Schmidl had to do a lot of convincing with the support of local councilor Michaela Hütteneder-Estermann (GfBH), “but now we can be very proud, we have probably reached 100 percent of our parents,” said Schmidl. There are very few parent taxis left; there are three designated stops for them – just a few minutes’ walk from the school.
The short walk is no problem for the children. Local councilor Hütteneder-Estermann said: “We adults have a very big responsibility here. This project has shown that the parents have actually been educated more than the children.” They now come to school almost exclusively on foot, take their scooters or the school bus.
Schmidl and Hütteneder-Estermann traveled to the city of Salzburg on Friday. There they accepted this year’s mobility award from the “Verkehrsclub Österreich (VCÖ)”. Schmidl: “This prize should be the beginning. We would like Schulstrasse to also be a pedestrian zone in the morning. This means that the children might also spend their breaks there.” The girls and boys have already decorated the street with many colorful pictures. Politicians and authorities still have to give the green light for the morning fuzo. The VS Bad Hofgastein knows how to persuade people.
