Beijing, Sep 22 (EFE).- China has the capacity to protect astronauts from the effects of weightlessness for 180 days in space, according to a forum on aerospace medicine that opened today in Beijing.

At the event, China Astronaut Research and Training Center researcher Li Yinghui noted that his research team has focused on “medical challenges induced by microgravity, space radiation and other space environment factors for the past 30 years.” years”, a period dating back to the beginning of the Chinese space program.

The expert asserted that Chinese specialists “have already created a protection system for the physiological effects of weightlessness in medium and long-duration manned space flights.”

The crew of Shenzhou-16, currently carrying out its mission on the Tiangong, the Chinese space station, sent a message to the forum, in which they assured that a key national laboratory for aerospace medicine has been “successfully established on the station.” .

According to the ‘taikonauts’, these advances will bring “new opportunities for the development of aerospace medicine.”

Advances in this field have provided theoretical and technical support for research on Earth in areas such as cardiovascular health, the musculoskeletal system, neurodegenerative diseases, human aging or the selection of medications, experts indicated during the event, collected today by the official Xinhua agency.

The forum is organized by the China Astronaut Research and Training Center, Beijing Institute of Technology and Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

On recent missions to Tiangong, Chinese astronauts have completed stays slightly longer than 180 days.

It is likely that the Chinese space station, which will operate for regarding ten years, will become the only space station in the world from 2024 if the International Space Station, an initiative led by the United States and to which China is banned from access by the military ties to its space program, will retire that year as planned.

China has invested heavily in its space program and has managed to land the Chang’e 4 probe on the far side of the Moon – the first time this has been achieved – and reach Mars for the first time, becoming the third country – following the United States and the extinct Soviet Union – in “amartizar”.
