“A great outcome”

As for the Tintigny authorities, we are delighted with the news. “This is a great outcome of a file that has been in progress since 2017, explains Benoît Piedboeuf, mayor of Tintigny. We failed the first time, but this time, it is recognized. This crowns a work of memory which has been carried out in Tintigny for years.”

Annual visits by Marine troops, relations with the municipalities concerned, visit of the German ambassador in 2018, memory trails carried out by the MERCi Foundation, the interpretation museum of the Battle of the Borders in Rossignol are all elements that the mayor highlights as part of this memory work. “It is a great recognition of the maintenance work carried out by the French ministry and the Commune when necessary, according to the mayor. These sites really have their justification in relation to History.”

Collective work

The application to obtain this title was carried out collectively, with different actors. “This is work that was done with France and Belgium, and in Belgium, the heritage service in Wallonia and Flanders,” explains Benoît Piedboeuf. “There was a lot of solidarity between the different actors and a lot of seriousness in preparation of files.”

A ceremony might be organized depending on the delivery of possible visual support indicating that these are places recognized by UNESCO. Otherwise, the title will be celebrated during the usual ceremonies at the end of August, specifies the mayor.
