She made Paris – the Opéra Garnier, the Alexandre III bridge and the Grand Palais – shine, but also other major capitals of the world, such as Brussels. It is also found near Place Stanislas in Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle). The stone of Euville, a town in the Meuse near Commercy, changes hands. The Canadian group Polycor, world leader in natural stone, has just bought the French company Rocamat (around thirty quarries, 160 employees) which had operated it until now.

In the Lorraine village, the information did not go unnoticed, even if it was received with fatalism. “In any case, the quarries are the property of the municipality. Rocamat yesterday, Polycor tomorrow pay us in exchange for the authorization to exploit these quarries,” recalls Alain Ferioli, the mayor. The quarries are located just 2 km from the limits of the village, and Euville stone, with its whiteness, fine grain and robustness, is omnipresent in the village.

From the town hall to the church via the premises of rural homes, “it is part of our history”, insists the mayor. “We signed an agreement with the operator for a minimum extraction of 1,500 m3 per year. This is nothing compared to the past: for the reconstruction of Paris following the war of 1870, extraction reached 160,000 m3 per year,” assures the city councilor.

The town hall is now regularly contacted by individuals. “Some want to redo stair steps or renovate terraces,” smiles Mr. Ferioli. We provide the company’s contact details. » We will soon know the intentions of the Canadian Polycor.
