Review: In the first season of 2019, “Sex Education” focuses on sex therapist Jean (Gillian Anderson) and her pubescent son Otis (Asa Butterfield). He may be uptight, but, armed with his mother’s expertise, he gives his classmates tutoring in bed.
In the final eight episodes, the mother-son relationship cooled down a bit. Jean basically has to look following her daughter Joy and her new job at the radio on her own, while Otis has just started college – and has real competition there when it comes to educational work.
The British coming-of-age series continues to impress with its progressive storytelling and extremely diverse cast. The final season, in which some beloved supporting characters are missing, is more colorful than ever before.
The popular student Aisha (Alexandra James) is dark-skinned, deaf and queer. Trans people, non-binary people, young men in wheelchairs and asexual young people can also be found in “Sex Education”.
Some might think that much diversity is exaggerated, but it is exactly the opposite: the reality. Many in the cast are what they play in real life: non-binary, trans or deaf.
Developed by Laurie Nunn, the work gives the characters enormous depth and is more than a typical teen series with some heartbreak and silly sex jokes. It’s regarding acceptance, self-love and the search for identity. And this at a time when conservative forces in the USA and other countries would like to ban the topic of sexual diversity from school sex education classes.
