Swiss Tourist Makes Headlines by Setting Expensive Lobster Free in Sardinian Fish Restaurant

A Swiss tourist caused a stir in a fish restaurant in Sardinia: she bought an expensive lobster and then set it free.

“The lady entered our restaurant and was immediately impressed by the aquarium we had at the entrance,” said Antonio Fasolino, the owner of a renowned seafood restaurant in Golfo Aranci in northern Sardinia. Fasolino was asked for interviews by several Italian media outlets. The reason: The tourist – an “elegant Swiss woman” – caused an extraordinary scene last week when she ordered in his restaurant.

Fasolino described what happened that evening in the Italian newspaper La Repubblica. While eating with her husband, the woman kept going to the aquarium and looking inside. Shown inside: a freshly caught lobster that had been selected to be cooked and served. “At first I thought she wanted to take a photo or a selfie with the crustacean,” the innkeeper told the newspaper.

“It should be a good deed”

But what happened next turned out to be a big surprise for the innkeeper: “She came up to me and asked – very kindly – if she might buy this lobster to give him freedom.” The woman was very polite, Fasolino also told the Italian news agency ANSA.

The innkeeper agreed following telling the couple the price of the animal. The lobster weighed regarding a kilo and, according to his description, the tourist paid around 200 euros without batting an eyelid.

The lobster was placed in a transparent bucket in front of the “incredulous eyes” of the restaurant owners and other guests and brought to the Swiss woman’s table. In a video circulating on social media, she can be seen sitting on the dock of the waterfront restaurant, gently petting the animal and talking to it. She then transports the lobster over a fence into the shallow water of the lagoon. Her husband stands nearby and films the scene with his cell phone.

Later, the restaurant owner Fasolino was touched by the gesture: “The customer wasn’t vegan. It was just supposed to be a good deed. She hugged me followingwards too,” he told La Repubblica. The lobster should also be happy that it narrowly escaped the cooking pot.
