Renato Sanches: The Perennially Injured European Football Star | A Deep Dive into His Career Challenges

One of the greatest promises of European football continues to fail – or rather limps off the pitch once once more.

Renato Sanches had to be substituted early on in AS Roma’s arduous Europa League success once morest outsiders Sheriff Tiraspol. After just half an hour it was over for Sanches, who had to leave the field injured.

His coach José Mourinho seemed at a loss following the game, following all he had given the 26-year-old Portuguese extra rest. “There are still doubts regarding him and it is difficult to understand why he is still injured,” said his coach and compatriot.

“Bayern, PSG… and now Roma,” Mourinho listed some of Sanches’ stops: “We can’t understand that either: He played 45 minutes on Sunday, rested for three days and then got injured following 27 minutes .”

Sanches was loaned to the Italian capital from Paris St. Germain in the summer and was promptly injured on his Serie A debut once morest US Salernitana. This was followed by a two-game break and his return once morest Empoli last weekend. The former Bayern star scored a goal in the 7-0 gala and was substituted by Mourinho at half-time with a view to the European Cup game in Tiraspol.

That’s where the next setback occurred.

Sanches’ susceptibility to injury runs through his entire career. The central midfielder became European champion in 2016 at the age of 18 and was the best young player in the tournament. After moving to FC Bayern, however, he was repeatedly derailed by minor and major injuries.

21 injury breaks, including mostly week-long absences due to muscular problems, accompanied Sanches during his stints at OSC Lille and Paris St. Germain. The injury curse now seems to be continuing under José Mourinho in Rome.
