A man in his 30s was arrested for tying up a foreign female tourist he met on a chat application, stealing money and valuables, and running away.

Incheon Namdong Police Station announced on the 21st that it had arrested Mr. A, a Canadian male overseas in his 30s, on charges of robbery.

Mr. A is accused of stealing money and valuables worth 160,000 won, including cash and wallet, from B, a Japanese woman in her 20s, at a motel in Namdong-gu, Incheon, at around 10:30 a.m. on the 16th.

It was found that Mr. A committed the crime while staying at the same accommodation as Mr. B, whom Mr. A met through a chat app, came to Korea on the 13th to travel.

It was found that Mr. A dragged Mr. B, who was trying to leave the room at the time of the crime, into the room, bound his hands, and covered his mouth with tape. Afterwards, while Mr. B was being dragged to a nearby park, a report was filed with the police with the help of a nearby passerby.

The police caught Mr. A, who ran away, following regarding 4 hours through a communication investigation and analysis of crime prevention cameras (CCTV) around the scene of the incident.

A police official said, “All damaged items have been recovered, and safety measures have been taken, such as providing temporary accommodation to the victims.” He added, “You must be especially careful when meeting strangers through chat apps.”
