Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj met with representatives of the US Congress at the start of his visit to Washington. Zelensky wanted to hold talks at the Capitol with members of the Senate and House of Representatives regarding additional US aid to defend once morest the Russian war of aggression.

US President Joe Biden has asked Congress for new funding for Ukraine worth $24 billion (around €22.5 billion). But there is resistance from the ranks of the opposition Republicans – and they make up the majority in the House of Representatives. The current budget talks are extremely difficult.

Zelenskyj also wanted to visit the US Department of Defense on Thursday and was to be received by Biden at the White House in the followingnoon (3 p.m. local time; 9 p.m. CEST). Among other things, the Ukrainian president is pushing for a delivery of longer-range missiles. However, the USA – like Germany – has shown restraint.

The USA is Ukraine’s most important supporter in the war once morest Russia and has already supplied billions worth of weapons and ammunition. Zelenskyj had already traveled to Washington last December and gave a speech to Congress there. It was his first trip abroad since the war began on February 24, 2022.

Zelenskyj now traveled to Washington from New York. The Ukrainian president took part in the UN general debate in the US metropolis this week. He spoke to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday and the UN Security Council on Wednesday.
