Temporary Closure of Belgian Red Cross’ Homeless Reception Center in Namur: A Cry for Safer Solutions

This is a surprising announcement which was made this Thursday morning by the Belgian Red Cross, through a press release.

”The Belgian Red Cross regrets to have to announce the temporary closure of its day reception center in Namur (rue Trou Perdu à Jambes), intended for a homeless population. Several incidents of a violent nature which have occurred there in recent times have in fact jeopardized the security of both beneficiaries and members of the Red Cross and no longer make it possible to offer dignified reception conditions. she indicates. On the side of the center, which does not wish to comment on this closure, we simply specify that this precautionary measure was taken because the situation has become too dangerous for everyone. “This closure of the Namur center is linked to repetitive incidents, but it is not only the Red Cross which is suffering.”

The center welcomes on average around fifty homeless people each morning, offers social showers, a laundry room, food and clothing assistance, as well as lockers to safely store personal belongings. At the time of writing, we do not know how long the center will be closed.

“Aware of the worsening of homelessness in large cities and at the dawn of the winter period, the Belgian Red Cross therefore invites the authorities and partners to redefine together the framework and operating methods of a day reception center in Namur, in order to offer a peaceful and respectful welcome place for everyone.”
