In the 49th minute of Manchester United’s 4-3 loss to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League group stage, Rasmus Hojlund scored his first goal for the club.

A Manchester fan since childhood, this goal would have had great meaning for him. If the goal had been scored under different circumstances, he might have celebrated it with even more passion.

Rasmus’ second-half goal came as Erik ten Hag’s side looked to get back into the game once morest the home side. It is a product of the same Hojlund-Rashford link-up play that the boss spoke regarding in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

First goal in a long series?

Marcus created the chance from the left, with a first-time pass, and Rasmus took up a dangerous position in the center and added the finishing touch with ease.

The manner in which the goal was scored is actually very similar to what Hojlund and the Old Trafford faithful thought would be his first for the club once morest Brighton & Hove Albion last Saturday, except that the latter was disallowed following a VAR decision on the ball which crossed the line.

If Rasmus’ speed is no longer in doubt, the goals he scored once morest Brighton and Bayern were in positions of

“poacher”

. Getting into the optimal zone to score goals is half the battle.

Besides his goal, the 20-year-old Danish striker did not seem perturbed by the event and posed some problems for Thomas Tuchel’s defense, particularly in the second half.

All strikers face a daunting task when joining a new club, and the media are often quick to put pressure on them. Now that Hojlund has done it, he and United fans will no doubt be hoping he can follow it up with more celebrations in the weeks and months to come.

The striker’s next opportunity to do so will be at Burnley, when United take on the Clarets at Turf Moor on Saturday evening.

The only other Scandinavian to score for the Reds once morest Bayern? Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, of course, in 1999. If our new player can do as well as the Norwegian, we will have plenty of good times to celebrate together.
