Charleroi Airport Strike Notice: Uniting Worker’s Rights and Management Policies

2023-09-21 09:07:43

The Charleroi airport staff unions (BSCA) are acting as a united front: they have just filed a 15-day strike notice regarding the “purchasing power bonus” of 750 euros which can be granted to workers at companies having achieved good financial performance in 2022. Management wants to condition the granting of the bonus according to part-time work and absenteeism, or to grant full bonuses to the most present workers. Those most absent would only receive bonuses in proportion to their presence. For Alain Goelens, permanent SETCA, management discriminates once morest the weakest workers, does not respect its commitments and leaves no room for negotiation.

For his part, the director of Charleroi airport, Philippe Verdonck, justifies his decision by the cost of absenteeism which would amount to between 600,000 and 1 million euros for the airport. He also explains that he wants to reward the workers present and adds that all Belgian companies that can do so do not grant this bonus or not completely.

Discussions between the two parties resume on Friday. In the event of a work stoppage, disruptions might affect passenger and baggage check-in operations but also activities on the runway such as baggage handling or fueling of planes.
