Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni estimated that the agreement on irregular migrants, signed between the European Union and Tunisia last July, “remains the most logical solution” to the ongoing crisis in her country.
This was reported by the Italian news agency “Nova”, quoting Meloni who spoke on Wednesday evening on the subject, on the sidelines of her participation in the meetings of the 78th session of the General Assembly of United Nations held in New York, in the presence of 150 heads of state and government.
Meloni added that the “European Commission considers that the memorandum of understanding with Tunisia can also be a model that can be used with other countries.”
This agreement aims to limit the arrival of irregular migrants on Italian coasts, and to provide financial aid to Tunisia, which is facing serious economic difficulties.
Meloni continued: “We need to complete this model and get the necessary resources, then the same program can also be used with other countries in North Africa.”
Despite the signing of the memorandum of understanding a few months ago, Flavio Di Giacomo, spokesperson for the office of the International Organization for Migration in the Mediterranean, said in a press release that Tunisia has now become the main departure point for irregular migrants to Europe.
Since the start of this year, nearly 126,000 irregular migrants have arrived in Italy, almost double the number compared to the same period in 2022, according to Western media.
Tunisia has recently seen a remarkable increase in irregular migration rates to Europe, particularly to Italian shores, amid economic and political crises in many African countries.
